On May 5, 2012, the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, played host to the WBA World and WBC Diamond super welterweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The bout was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions and was televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Cotto, defending his WBA World Super Welterweight Title for the third time, entered the fight as the No. 1 junior middleweight contender according to The Ring Magazine. Mayweather, who was a 6-1 betting favorite, was ranked as the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world and the No. 2 welterweight contender.
The fight was billed as "Ring Kings," and it lived up to its name as both fighters put on a display of world-class boxing. Mayweather came out strong, using his quickness and agility to outmaneuver Cotto in the early rounds. However, Cotto refused to back down and continued to apply pressure, forcing Mayweather to fight on the inside.
As the fight progressed, Cotto's relentless attacks began to take their toll on Mayweather. In the middle rounds, Cotto landed a series of hard punches that had Mayweather in trouble. But Mayweather, known for his defensive skills, managed to weather the storm and regained control of the fight in the later rounds.
In the 12th and final round, Mayweather dominated, rocking Cotto with a series of hard punches that nearly sent him to the canvas. Despite the late surge, the fight went the distance, and Mayweather was declared the winner by unanimous decision.
After the fight, Mayweather paid tribute to Cotto, calling him "the toughest guy I ever fought." The victory improved Mayweather's record to an impressive 43-0, while Cotto fell to 37-3
