On Saturday 2, May 2009, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas played host to the Miguel Cotto vs Manny Pacquiao superfight. The fight was promoted by Top Rank and Don King Productions and was aired on HBO Pay-Per-View. The vacant WBC Diamond and WBO World Welterweight Titles were on the line.
The was made at a catchweight of 145 lbs, with Manny Pacquiao coming in at 144 lbs and Miguel Cotto at 145 lbs. From the start of the fight, it was clear that both fighters were in top form and were not going to hold back. The first two rounds were closely contested, with both boxers trading blows and showing great skill.
The third round saw Pacquiao land a right hand that sent Cotto to the canvas. Cotto managed to get back up, but the knockdown gave Pacquiao the momentum he needed to dominate the fight. In the fourth round, Pacquiao dropped Cotto again, this time with a powerful left hand as Cotto was advancing forward.
Despite being knocked down twice, Cotto continued to fight with great heart and determination. He managed to rally in the middle rounds, but Pacquiao's speed and accuracy proved too much for him to handle. In the later rounds, Pacquiao began to dominate once again, landing heavy blows that left Cotto reeling.
The referee finally stepped in to stop the fight with just over two minutes left in the final round. Cotto was on the ropes, taking a barrage of punches from Pacquiao without fighting back. The referee determined that Cotto was no longer able to defend himself, and the fight was called in Pacquiao's favor.
With this win, Pacquiao made history by becoming the first boxer to win titles in seven different weight classes. It was a remarkable achievement that cemented his status as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
