Miguel Cotto faced Yoshihiro Kamegai on Saturday, 26th August 2017 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The fight was promoted by MC Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, and Teiken Promotions, and was aired on HBO World Championship Boxing. The contest was for the vacant WBO World Super-welterweight Title.
Miguel Cotto, hailing from Caguas, Puerto Rico and boasting a record of 40-5-0, weighed in at 153½ lbs and entered the ring as the more seasoned and skilled fighter. Yoshihiro Kamegai from Tokyo, Japan on the other hand, had a record of 27-3-2 and weighed in at 153¾ lbs.
The match was an action-packed affair, with both fighters showing 100% commitment throughout. Cotto, a former four-division world champion, showcased his experience and tactical ability, while Kamegai demonstrated his grit and determination, relentlessly pressing forward despite taking significant punishment.
Referee Lou Moret officiated the match, which went the full 12 rounds. Ultimately, Miguel Cotto emerged victorious, defeating Yoshihiro Kamegai by unanimous decision. The judges' scores were as follows: Pat Russell scored the match 119-109, Robin Taylor had it 120-108, and Zachary Young scored it 118-110, all in favor of Cotto.
Victory, at the age of 37 added another world title to Miguel Cotto's trophy cabinet, but taking nothing away from the teak-tough Kamegai, this looked like a win that the Puerto Rican would have made far easier some years before.
