On Saturday, November 10, 2007, a highly anticipated bout between Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley took place at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York. The event, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, featured the WBA World Welterweight Title on the line, with Cotto making his 3rd defense. The contest was broadcasted on HBO Pay-Per-View, with Benjy Esteves Jr. serving as the referee. Prior to the fight, Mosley held a record of 44-4-0, while Cotto boasted an undefeated record of 30-0-0. Both fighters weighed in at 146¼ lbs.

In the early rounds of the fight, Cotto from Caguas, Puerto Rico, managed to land the better shots, dominating round one and most of round two. Mosley, however, was not to be outdone, landing some powerful rights towards the end of the second round. Round three saw both fighters exchanging big shots, with Cotto momentarily shaken by a Mosley right hand. An exciting back-and-forth ensued in the fourth round, with both fighters showcasing their skills in the ring.

As the fight progressed, round five was closely contested, but Cotto seemed to be taking control by the sixth round. Mosley made adjustments and tried boxing from the outside in the seventh round, a strategy that continued into the eighth. In the ninth round, Mosley hurt Cotto, but the Puerto Rican fighter fought back valiantly towards the end. Round ten saw Mosley dominate the first half, only for Cotto to rally in the second half. Mosley pressed on in the eleventh round, but Cotto's counterpunches secured him the round. In the final round, Cotto opted to stay out of range, possibly believing he had already won the fight.

At the end of the twelve-round battle, Miguel Cotto emerged victorious, defeating Shane Mosley by unanimous decision. Judges Glenn Feldman, Wynn Kintz, and Peter Trematerra scored the fight 115-113, 116-113, and 115-113, respectively. With this win, Cotto successfully retained his WBA World Welterweight Title. The fighters' purses for the event saw Mosley earning $2 million, while Cotto's earnings were undisclosed.
