Holmes knocked out Evangelista in the 7th round whilst making the first defence of the WBC world heavyweight title he had won from Ken Norton 5 months earlier.

The fight was staged at The Caesars Palace, Sports Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada in front of a 5,300 crowd. Evangelista entered the fight as a 4-1 betting underdog. He was the reigning European champion with a 23-2-1 record.

Referee Richard Green counted the Spaniard out at 2:14 of the 7th round.
