Entering The Riviera Hotel & Casino, Outdoor Arena in Las Vegas as a 4-1 betting favourite with a 46-0 record, Holmes got a shock in the 2nd round when Philadelphia's David Bey (14-0) caught him with a thunderous left hook that rocked him to his boots, admitting later  "He got my attention."

Holmes, the IBF champion took the advice of trainer Eddie Futch and backed the younger and heavier challenger up, draining him of strength and power until in the 8th Holmes dropped him twice with right hands. The Holmes onslaught continued until 2:58 of the 10th round when referee Carlos Padilla finally stepped in to save Bey from further punishment.

This was Holmes 2nd defence of the IBF world heavyweight title he was awarded after being stripped of the WBC version of which he made 16 straight successful defences.
