On March 15, 1985, at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Larry Holmes defended his IBF World Heavyweight Title against the undefeated challenger David Bey. Holmes, entering the ring with a pristine record of 46-0, was widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights of the era. With a promising 14-0 record, Bey was viewed as a strong, powerful challenger but lacked the experience of the reigning champion.

From the outset, Holmes displayed the skill and precision that had defined his reign as heavyweight champion. Utilizing his sharp jab and impeccable ring generalship, Holmes controlled the distance and tempo, making it difficult for the heavier Bey to impose his strength. Bey, weighing in at 233¼ pounds compared to Holmes' 223½ pounds, tried to close the gap and land power shots, but the champion's defence and footwork kept him out of danger.

As the rounds progressed, Bey began to show signs of frustration, unable to consistently penetrate Holmes' defences. Holmes, meanwhile, increased his output, delivering combinations and working the body to wear down his younger opponent. Bey's efforts to turn the tide were commendable, but Holmes' experience and tactical superiority were evident throughout.

In the 10th round, the champion's sustained attacks took their toll on Bey. Holmes landed a series of clean punches that left Bey visibly shaken, forcing referee Carlos Padilla to step in and halt the contest. Holmes was declared the winner by technical knockout, successfully retaining his IBF World Heavyweight Title and extending his unbeaten record to 47-0.
