On Saturday, 10th November 2001, the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California, played host to the highly anticipated WBC World Super-featherweight Title fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Jesus Chavez. Mayweather, the reigning champion, was making his 8th title defense, while Chavez entered the ring as the No. 1 WBC super featherweight contender.
The fight started with both fighters displaying their skills and showcasing their unique styles. Mayweather, known for his exceptional defensive abilities and quick counter-punching, found success in keeping Chavez at bay. Chavez, on the other hand, attempted to close the distance and land powerful shots on the elusive Mayweather.
As the rounds progressed, Mayweather's technical prowess became increasingly apparent. He was able to effectively dodge Chavez's attacks and consistently land clean precise punches. Chavez demonstrated his resilience and determination, pressing forward and attempting to find openings in Mayweather's defense.
Despite his best efforts, Chavez was unable to break through Mayweather's defensive wall. As the fight entered the ninth round, Chavez began to take a significant amount of punishment from Mayweather's precise counter-punches. Recognizing the danger to his fighter, Chavez's trainer, Ronnie Shields, made the difficult decision to stop the fight after the ninth round.
Shields expressed his concern for Chavez's well-being, stating, "You're getting hit too much now." At the time of the stoppage, HBO's unofficial judge Harold Lederman had Mayweather ahead with a narrow score of 86-85. This result confirmed Mayweather's victory and allowed him to retain his WBC World Super-featherweight Title.
