On May 2, 2015, the much-anticipated WBC, WBA, and WBO World Welterweight Title fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dubbed as the Fight of the Century or the Battle for Greatness, the fight lived up to its hype and became the highest-grossing boxing event of all time.
Mayweather Jr, the undefeated five-division world champion, faced Pacquiao, the eight-division world champion. The fight was promoted by Top Rank and Mayweather Promotions and was broadcasted by HBO PPV in the United States and Showtime.
From the first round, Mayweather Jr. took control of the fight with his quick and accurate jabs, making it difficult for Pacquiao to find his rhythm. Pacquiao tried to get inside Mayweather Jr.'s defense but struggled to land significant punches.
As the rounds progressed, Mayweather Jr. continued to dominate, landing more punches and effectively avoiding Pacquiao's attacks. Pacquiao showed signs of fatigue in the later rounds, and Mayweather Jr. took advantage of this by landing more punches and controlling the pace of the fight.
In the end, Mayweather Jr. won the contest by unanimous decision, with scores of 118–110, 116–112, and 116–112. With this victory, Mayweather Jr. maintained his undefeated record of 48 professional fights, stretching back 19 years.
On the other hand, Pacquiao suffered his sixth professional loss, bringing his record to 57 wins, six losses, and two draws. Despite his loss, Pacquiao showed great sportsmanship and congratulated Mayweather Jr. on his victory.
The Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao fight was a historic moment in boxing history, with an estimated 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases and a gate of $72.2 million.
