On Saturday, 12th March 2011, Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto defended his WBA World Super-welterweight Title against Nicaraguan challenger Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout, promoted by Top Rank, Don King Productions, and Gary Shaw Productions, was Miguel Cotto's first defense of his title. Cotto entered the fight with a record of 35-2-0, while Mayorga held a record of 29-7-1.

Both fighters weighed in at 154 lbs for the super-welterweight contest. Referee Robert Byrd officiated the match, which was aired on Showtime Pay-per-view. Cotto, hailing from Caguas, Puerto Rico, was the favorite going into the fight, while Mayorga, from Managua, Nicaragua, aimed to upset the reigning champion.
