On Saturday, 12th March 2011, the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut hosted the Sergio Martinez vs Serhiy Dzinziruk middleweight title bout. The event was promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Banner Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions, and Gary Shaw Productions, and the fight was televised on HBO World Championship Boxing. With a record of 46-2-2, Sergio Martinez defended his Ring Magazine World Middleweight Title for the second time against Serhiy Dzinziruk, who had an undefeated record of 37-0-0. Both fighters weighed in at 158¾ lbs. Martinez, hails from Quilmes, Argentina, while Dzinziruk resided in Hamburg, Germany via Nizhnegorskiy, Crimea, Ukraine.
The fight was for the vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight and Martinez's Ring Magazine World Middleweight titles. Dzinziruk had previously won the WBC world super-welterweight title in December 2005 against Daniel Santos, successfully defending it six times before moving up to challenge Martinez.
The bout was a display of Martinez's dominance in the ring. Dzinziruk was knocked down once in the 4th round, once in the 5th round, and three times in the 8th round. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. counted out Dzinziruk at 1:43 of the 8th round after the final knock down.
Martinez's powerful performance was a decisive victory, retaining his Ring Magazine World Middleweight Title and winning the vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight Title. This victory further cemented his status as boxing's top middleweight.
Both fighters received significant compensation for their efforts in the ring. Martinez earned $1.2 million for the fight, while Dzinziruk took home $850,000.
