On Saturday, 12th April 2008, boxing fans at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City witnessed a one-sided beat down by Miguel Cotto over Alfonso Gomez. The event, promoted by Top Rank and aired on HBO World Championship Boxing, saw Cotto defend his WBA World Welterweight Title for the fourth time. Cotto, hailing from Caguas, Puerto Rico, entered the ring with an impressive record of 31-0-0, while Gomez, from Guadalajara, Mexico, had a record of 18-3-2.

From the onset, Cotto displayed his superior skills and strength. Weighing in at 146½ lbs, he managed to stagger Gomez, who weighed 147 lbs, with a powerful body shot in the closing moments of the first round. The intensity continued to build in round two, as Cotto scored a flash knockdown.

The third round saw Cotto's dominance continue, as he dropped Gomez with a well-placed left hook to the body. Gomez, showing his resilience, managed to rise and continue to fight. However, Cotto's relentless attack persisted, leading to yet another knockdown in the fifth round, this time from a jab.

With Gomez struggling to cope with Cotto's power, the fight was stopped on the advice of the ring doctor before the start of the sixth round. The official result was a victory for Miguel Cotto by RTD (Referee Technical Decision) at 3:00 in round 5
