On May 1, 2010, Floyd Mayweather Jr faced Shane Mosley in a welterweight super-fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast on HBO Pay-Per-View. Mayweather, who closed as a 4-1 betting favourite, was guaranteed $22.5 million plus a percentage of the pay-per-view revenue, while Mosley was guaranteed $7 million.
The fight generated significant interest and was watched by a crowd of 15,117, producing a gate of $11,032,100. The fight also generated 1.4 million pay-per-view buys, which included 740,000 buys from cable homes and 660,000 from satellite and broadband homes, resulting in a total of $78.33 million in pay-per-view revenue.
In the ring, Mayweather put on a dominant performance, winning 11 of the 12 rounds and extending his undefeated record to 41-0. Mosley did manage to stun Mayweather with a powerful right hand in the second round, nearly causing the first knockdown of Mayweather's career. However, Mayweather quickly recovered and went on to control the fight, outboxing and outmanoeuvring Mosley for the remainder of the fight.
After the fight, Mosley cited neck tightness as a factor that inhibited his performance, saying "I tried to move around, but he was too quick and I was too tight ... I thought I had to knock him out [early]". Mosley also praised Mayweather's performance, saying "I couldn't adjust and he did."
Mayweather, on the other hand, downplayed Mosley's second-round moment, saying "In the ring, you have to protect yourself at all times.
