Pedroza made the 20th defence of the title he had won seven years earlier against Spaniard Cecilio Lastra, at home at the Gimnasio Nuevo Panama in Panama City against fellow countryman Lujan (27-7-0). Pedroza won a comfortable unanimous decision.

Pedroza lost his title four months later when he travelled to London, England to take on Irishman Barry McGuigan in front of 26,00 screaming fans at Loftus Road Football Stadium.
