Danny 'Little Red' Lopez made the ninth defence of his WBC World Featherweight title against the relatively unknown Mexican Salvador Sanchez at the Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona. Despite his 33-1-1 record coming into the fight, Sanchez was seen as an easy mark for the accomplished champion, but after 13 action-packed rounds, Lopez had taken a terrible beating, suffering multiple cuts and swelling on his eyes nose, and cheeks.

Sanchez staggered the champion several times during the course of the fight and referee Waldemar Schmidt stepped in at 0:51 of the 13th round after Sanchez caught Lopez with a hard right hand-left hook which forced the champion to the ropes, leaving him looking unsteady and vulnerable.

Lopez would try to reclaim the title four months later, this time lasting a round longer (Tko R 14). He retired after the second loss to Sanchez but made an ill-advised comeback in 1992 (L Ko R 2) before hanging his gloves up for good.
