Shane Mosley, also known as "Sugar" Shane, weighed in at 134¾ lbs for the contest, while Golden Johnson tipped the scales at the lightweight limit of 135 lbs. Johnson, hailing from San Antonio, Texas, had the chance to prove himself against the undefeated Mosley in front of a packed crowd at the Civic Center.
From the opening bell, Mosley showcased his speed and power, overwhelming Johnson with a barrage of punches. Despite Johnson's best efforts to counter and establish his own offense, Mosley's superior skills and agility proved to be too much for the challenger. As the fight progressed, Mosley continued to press the action and dominate the exchanges, while Johnson tried to adapt to the pace and find a way to turn the tide.
Through the first six rounds, Mosley displayed his championship pedigree, maintaining control of the fight and landing clean, powerful shots on Johnson.
In the seventh round, Mosley's relentless attack finally took its toll on Johnson. A devastating combination from Mosley sent Johnson crashing to the canvas, prompting Referee Kimmons to call a halt to the contest.
