On Saturday, May 5th, 2012, Saul Alvarez took on Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the WBC World Super Welterweight Title. The fight was promoted by MC Promotions, Mayweather Promotions, and Golden Boy Promotions and aired on HBO Pay-Per-View. Alvarez was defending his title for the fourth time, while Mosley, at 40 years old, was 19 years older than his opponent.

Mosley likely took the opening round, working behind a jab, as Alvarez did not throw a punch for the first minute and a half. However, Alvarez closed Round 2 well with three clean left hooks to the head of Mosley. The third of which caused Mosley to clinch. Alvarez continued to land the cleaner shots in Round 3, despite a clash of heads that opened a gash on the outside of Alvarez's left eyelid that would intermittently stream down the side of his face for the remainder of the fight.

In Round 4, Mosley outworked Alvarez in a close round, but Alvarez landed at a higher rate despite throwing fewer punches. Mosley continued to come forward behind a jab and mixed in an occasional hook to the body. In Round 5, Alvarez snapped back Mosley's head with a jab and continued to land clean power shots. Rounds 6 and 7 were strong ones for Alvarez, who often rested in the first half of rounds before opening up and rocking Mosley in the second halves.

In Round 8, Alvarez landed some solid body shots as Mosley continued to get caught with power punches. Mosley was game and did throw, but was getting caught with heavy punches. Much of the same continued in the final one-third of the fight as Mosley's face became reddened and swollen.

The fight went the full 12 rounds, and Alvarez beat Mosley by unanimous decision. Jesse Reyes scored the fight 119-109, CJ Ross scored it 118-110, and Glenn Trowbridge scored it 119-109. Alvarez, from Guadalajara, Mexico, earned a purse of $2 million, while Mosley earned $650,000.
