On Saturday, 27th June 1998, Madison Square Garden Theater in New York played host to the Shane Mosley vs Eduardo Bartolome Morales IBF World Lightweight Title fight. Promoted by Cedric Kushner Productions and featured on TNT Title Night Boxing, the event saw Mosley defending his title for the fifth time. Mosley, with an impressive record of 28-0-0, faced Morales, who entered the ring with a record of 26-0-0, hailing from Santiago del Estero, Argentina.
Mosley weighed in at 134 lbs and Morales at 133¾ lbs. The early rounds saw Mosley and Morales exchanging on fairly equal terms and Morales even rocked the champion with a counter left hook in the 2nd round.
The momentum shifted during the third round when Mosley landed a hard left hook to Morales' body. The blow sent Morales to the canvas. Morales, however, proved his resilience and got back on his feet, managing to survive the round. Despite the knockdown, Morales continued to put up a valiant effort, attempting to regain his footing in the fight.
As the rounds progressed, Mosley's superior speed and skill began to show. The Argentinian fighter was struggling to keep up with the onslaught. Mosley continued to target Morales' body, exploiting the vulnerability that had been exposed in the third round.
In the fifth round, Mosley's patience paid dividends and proved to be too much for Morales. At 2:06 into the round, referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stepped in and stopped the fight, declaring Mosley the winner by TKO.
