The fight

On November 25, 2017, Sergey Kovalev emphatically rebounded from his two defeats to Andre Ward with a dominant second-round TKO victory over Vyacheslav Shabranskyy at Madison Square Garden Theater. The fight, promoted by Main Events, Krusher Promotions, and Golden Boy Promotions, saw Kovalev claim the vacant WBO and IBA light heavyweight titles.

Kovalev, weighing in at 174 pounds, established his dominance immediately. He floored Shabranskyy twice in the opening round, with the second knockdown leaving his 175-pound opponent visibly disoriented. The Ukrainian barely survived to hear the bell, requiring a medical check between rounds.

The assault continued in round two. Kovalev's precise right hand found Shabranskyy's temple, producing a third knockdown. With his fighter absorbing heavy damage and showing no signs of adjustment, trainer Manny Robles intervened at 2:36, prompting referee Harvey Dock to stop the contest.

This victory repositioned Kovalev in the light heavyweight division's elite, particularly significant after Main Events had successfully petitioned the WBO to sanction this as a title fight. The IBA belt, which has been vacant since Bernard Hopkins declined to pay sanctioning fees after defeating Beibut Shumenov in 2014, provided additional hardware.

Post-fight, Kovalev expressed interest in unification bouts, notably after Marcus Browne and Sullivan Barrera reportedly declined previous offers to face him. Main Events indicated plans for Kovalev's return to MSG in March 2018, with HBO's support secured.
