In a compelling display of experience over raw talent, Sergey Kovalev retained his WBO light heavyweight title against Anthony Yarde on August 24, 2019, at the Traktor Sport Palace in Chelyabinsk, Russia. The 36-year-old champion stopped his previously undefeated challenger at 2:04 of the eleventh round.
Kovalev (174½ lbs) controlled the early rounds with his jab. However, in the eighth round, he faced a dramatic momentum shift when Yarde (174 lbs) mounted a ferocious body attack that transitioned to the head, nearly finishing the champion. This crisis prompted Buddy McGirt, Kovalev's trainer, to warn his fighter he would stop the contest if such punishment continued.
The scorecards at the time of stoppage revealed Kovalev's overall control: 98-92, 97-94, and 96-93. However, these numbers don't reflect the drama of the eighth round or Kovalev's remarkable recovery in the ninth, where he reverted to fundamental boxing behind his jab. The tenth round saw Kovalev turn aggressor, with Yarde visibly depleted from his earlier assault.
The finish came via a precise power jab in the eleventh, dropping Yarde flat on his back. The victory, Kovalev's 29th knockout in 34 wins, positioned him for a potential superfight with Canelo Alvarez. For Yarde, his first defeat in 19 fights came with Kovalev's post-fight assessment that the Londoner's skillset needed to be improved by inexperience at the elite level.
The contrast between Yarde's explosive but unsustainable offence and Kovalev's veteran composure under pressure ultimately defined this championship contest.
