The fight

The June 17, 2017, rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center produced a controversial eighth-round stoppage that marked Ward's only defence of his unified WBA Super, WBO, and IBF light heavyweight titles. Billed as "No Excuses," the bout generated less commercial interest than their first meeting, drawing 130,000 pay-per-view buys and a $2.18 million gate from 6,366 paid attendees.

The competitive nature of the fight showed in the scorecards at the time of the stoppage: Feldman and Moretti had Ward ahead 67-66, while Weisfeld favoured Kovalev 68-65. CompuBox statistics revealed Kovalev's superior output (95 of 407 punches, 23%) compared to Ward's accuracy (80 of 238 punches, 34%).

The decisive sequence began with Ward landing an overhand right that visibly hurt Kovalev. The finish proved contentious as Ward followed with three hooks to the body that appeared borderline or below the belt line. Referee Tony Weeks stopped the contest at 2:29 of round eight with Kovalev doubled over on the ropes.

The post-fight analysis was split between technical and controversial perspectives. Johnny Nelson argued for a count and recovery time for Kovalev, while Paul Malignaggi termed the stoppage "terrible" despite acknowledging Kovalev's fatigue. The financial structure showed the bout's power dynamics: Ward received a guaranteed $6.5 million, while Kovalev worked for percentage points of revenue.

The HBO replay averaged 752,000 viewers, peaking at 947,000 during the final round. This would prove Ward's final professional bout, and three months later, he announced his retirement with an undefeated record. The controversial ending added complexity to both fighters' legacies, with debate continuing over the legitimacy of the stoppage.
