On June 17, 2000, at the Bicycle Club in Bell Gardens, California, Jose Luis Castillo (40-4-0) captured the WBC lightweight title from Stevie Johnston (30-1-0) via split decision in what Ring Magazine would later name its "Upset of the Year."
The contest marked a significant shift in the lightweight division's power structure. Since regaining the title from Cesar Bazan in February 1999, Johnston had been an active champion, successfully defending against Aldo Rios, Angel Manfredy, Billy Schwer, and most recently stopping Julio Alvarez in two rounds. His only previous defeat had come against Bazan in June 1998, a loss he had avenged.
Under referee Chuck Hassett's supervision, the fight was characterized by consistent inside fighting, with the relatively unknown Castillo matching Johnston's renowned technical skills at close range. The victory established Castillo as a force in the lightweight division while ending Johnston's impressive run of title defences.
The ABC Sports-televised event, promoted by Top Rank, saw both fighters make the 135-pound limit and demonstrated the depth of talent in the lightweight division. Castillo's victory represented one of boxing's most significant title changes of 2000.
