On August 17, 2013, at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena, Sergey Kovalev demolished WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in four rounds, establishing himself as a major force in the division. The bout matched The Ring Magazine's #2 (Cleverly) and #3 (Kovalev) contenders, with both fighters entering undefeated.
Kovalev immediately demonstrated why he'd earned the nickname "Krusher," dominating the early rounds with power combinations to both head and body. Cleverly, fighting in front of his home crowd, briefly attempted to trade in the opening round but quickly adopted a defensive posture after experiencing Kovalev's power.
The third round proved decisive as Kovalev scored two knockdowns - the first of Cleverly's professional career. The champion was so severely hurt that referee Terry O'Connor had to assist him back to his corner at the round's end. Kovalev wasted no time in the fourth, forcing O'Connor to stop the bout at 0:29.
The outcome answered lingering questions about Kovalev's ability to maintain his power-punching effectiveness against elite opposition. For Cleverly, who had entered with a record of 26-0 (12 KOs) and hopes of securing unification bouts in America, the loss exposed significant defensive vulnerabilities despite his youth at 26.
The performance positioned Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KOs) for more significant opportunities in a division ruled by Adonis Stevenson. His devastating efficiency - three knockdowns en route to the stoppage - demonstrated why his finishing rate had reached 87% and suggested the arrival of a new power broker in the light heavyweight ranks.
