On Friday, 10th May 1991, local hero Michael Nunn brought boxing back to Iowa and the John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport, his hometown. The fight was between Nunn, who was defending his IBF World Middleweight Title for the sixth time, and the fifth-ranked middleweight contender, James Toney. The event was promoted by Top Rank and aired on TVKO. Prior to the fight, Nunn held an undefeated record of 36-0, while Toney's record stood at 25-0-1.
Nunn entered the fight as a heavy 20-1 favorite, with a purse of $500,000, while Toney's purse was significantly lower at $65,000. The tension between the two fighters was evident, with Toney's persistent trash talk angering Nunn. Nunn vowed to punish Toney in the ring, stating, "I'm going to enjoy punishing this guy."
As the fight began, it seemed as though Nunn would deliver on his promise. He used his height advantage, standing at 6'3", and his southpaw style, to befuddle Toney. Nunn's lightning-fast hands and exceptional defense appeared to be steering him towards victory, as he built a substantial points lead.
However, James Toney never stopped believing in his ability to overcome the odds. He fought back and managed to close the points gap, demonstrating his own skill and resilience. As the fight continued, Toney's confidence grew, and the momentum began to shift in his favor.
In the eleventh round, Toney's determination paid off. At 2:14 into the round, he delivered a devastating combination that sent Nunn to the canvas. Referee Dennis Nelson stepped in to stop the fight as a white towel from Nunn's corner flew into the ring, signaling their concession.
