On Friday, November 4, 1988, a significant boxing event took place at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight featured the then-undefeated Michael Nunn, hailing from Davenport, Iowa, defending his IBF World Middleweight Title against the experienced Juan Domingo Roldan from Freyre, Cordoba, Argentina. The fight was promoted by Top Rank and marked the first title defense for Nunn.
The bout began with a strong statement from Nunn, who managed to knock down Roldan in the first round. Despite this early setback, Roldan showed resilience and determination, fighting his way through the following rounds. However, Nunn's skill and power proved to be too much for the Argentinian challenger.
In the eighth round, Nunn delivered a decisive knockout blow at 2:28, securing his victory and retaining his IBF World Middleweight Title. The fight was overseen by referee Richard Steele, who counted Roldan out after the knockout. This marked Roldan's final professional bout and his third unsuccessful attempt at winning a world middleweight title, having previously lost to boxing greats Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns.
At the time of the fight, Michael Nunn's record stood at an impressive 31 wins and no losses, while Juan Domingo Roldan's record was 67 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws. Nunn's victory further cemented his status as a formidable middleweight champion.
