On Monday, 14th August 1989, the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada, played host to the IBF World Middleweight Champion Michael Nunn's third title defense against Iran Barkley. Promoted by Top Rank and aired on HBO World Championship Boxing, this fight drew considerable attention from boxing fans.
Both fighters entered the ring with impressive records. Michael Nunn, with an undefeated record of 33-0 (23 KOs) while Barkley's 25-5-0 ledger was deceptive as he had generally faced a higher level of competition during his boxing apprenticeship.
The fight was scheduled for 12 rounds, and veteran referee Carlos Padilla was appointed to officiate the contest. Despite expectations for an intense and aggressive fight, Nunn chose to forgo his typical ferocious style and, instead, danced through the rounds, making it an unexciting bout.
In the end, Michael Nunn emerged victorious, beating Iran Barkley by split decision. Judge Glen Hamada scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Nunn, while judge Art Lurie had it slightly wider at 116-113. The third judge, Keith MacDonald, scored the fight a draw at 114-114. Consequently, Nunn retained his IBF World Middleweight Title.
Following the fight, Michael Nunn's record improved to 34-0, solidifying his status as a dominant force in the middleweight division. Nunn received a payday of $1.25 million for his performance, a substantial amount reflecting his growing prominence in the sport.
