In a heated encounter at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, on 18th November 1989, Julio Cesar Chavez defended his WBC World Super-lightweight Title against Sammy Fuentes. Both fighters, weighing in at 139¾ lbs, exhibited high determination and skill, leading to a memorable bout. Chavez, hailing from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, came into this fight with an impressive record of 66-0-0, while Fuentes, a resident of Loiza, Puerto Rico, held a record of 21-6-1.
The fight was a high-intensity affair right from the beginning. Fuentes came out quickly in the 1st round, moving around the ring and throwing hooks and uppercuts whenever he got in close. Chavez, however, replied with more hooks, demonstrating his superiority despite Fuentes' aggressive approach. The 2nd round saw Fuentes bobbing and weaving, but Chavez remained the more effective puncher, dodging or blocking most of Fuentes' uppercuts.
As the fight progressed into the 3rd and 4th rounds, Fuentes tried to maintain his attack, but Chavez was too precise and effective. Fuentes continued to move well, often switching to a southpaw stance, but Chavez continued to land hard punches, with his brutal hooks to the body. Fuentes did attempt to maintain a distance from Chavez, lunging forward from time to time, but Chavez was usually able to evade and counter with hard rights.
The middle rounds saw Chavez continue his dominance. Despite Fuentes showing some resilience and landing a few light punches, Chavez's left hooks to the body seemed to hurt Fuentes. In the 8th round, despite a headbutt that drew a complaint from Chavez, Fuentes stuck to his game plan of moving in and out quickly. Chavez, though, remained patient and continued to land hard body shots.
The 9th round saw both fighters trading blows, but Chavez's punches were more effective especially his right cross. Fuentes' face bore the brunt of Chavez's onslaught, with his right eye swollen almost completely shut by the end of the round. The 10th round saw Chavez increase his assault, throwing a flurry of punches Fuentes couldn't respond to. Despite Fuentes' valiant attempts to fight back, the damage was done.
Finally, after enduring a considerable amount of punishment, the fight was stopped at the end of the 10th round, upon advice from the ringside doctor. Fuentes' corner decided to retire him, sealing Chavez's victory and successful defense of his WBC World Super-lightweight Title.
Fuentes would go on to win the vacant WBO world super-lightweight title against Fidel Avendano (42-4) in February 1995 and defend it against Hector Lopez four months later before losing the belt in Italy to Giovanni Parisi.
