In what would become one of boxing's most controversial ever fights, Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker met on September 10, 1993. This encounter held significant stakes, as the undefeated Chavez (87-0-0), from Culiacan, Mexico, faced Whitaker (32-1-0) from Norfolk, Virginia, at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas.

Whitaker, having won the WBC welterweight title against James (Buddy) McGirt earlier that year, was defending this title for the first time against Chavez. Chavez, on the other hand, was eyeing his fourth weight division title, a feat only achieved by a handful of fighters in boxing history. The fighters were close in weight, with Chavez at 142 lbs and Whitaker at the agreed-upon catchweight of 145 lbs.

The match commenced with Chavez pressing the attack, hoping to stifle Whitaker's elusive movements. Whitaker, known for his 'sleeping style', was a difficult puzzle to solve for the more aggressive Chavez. As the match progressed, Whitaker began to assert dominance, frustrating Chavez with his unique, unpredictable style.

Chavez found a renewed vigour in the fifth round, enjoying some of his best successes of the bout. But, the sixth through eighth rounds were clearly in Whitaker's favour, his consistent jabs and elusive movements leaving Chavez often appearing despondent. Despite an accidental low blow by Whitaker in the sixth, Chavez remained largely ineffective against Whitaker's strategic manoeuvres.

In the final rounds, Chavez desperately sought to turn the tide, but Whitaker's tactical defense continued to dominate. Even though Chavez made a valiant effort in the ninth, Whitaker blunted his advances and closed out the final rounds safely. Despite the clearly skewed performance, Chavez still raised his arms at the end, hopefully gesturing a victory that was not to be.

The fight's conclusion sparked controversy. As ring announcer Jimmy Lenon Jr announced a majority decision draw, the largely pro-Mexican crowd booed their disapproval, and the boxing community and media who saw Whitaker as the clear winner were up in arms. The fight's result stirred doubts about the fairness of the judges' decisions, some alleging political influences and biases at play.
