On the evening of Friday, August 21st, 1987, the Hipódromo de Agua Caliente, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico served as the backdrop for the homecoming of a Mexican Idol. Undefeated phenom, Julio Cesar Chavez, stepped into the ring for his 9th title defense, weighing in at 129 lbs, while his opponent, Danilo Cabrera of the Dominican Republic, mirrored his weight at the same 129 lbs.
Cabrera, a respectable contender with a record of 29-5-0, sought to claim the title from the dominant Chavez, whose spotless 55-0-0 record echoed the formidable challenge that lay ahead. Cabrera's record included notable bouts against Barry McGuigan and Azumah Nelson. This latest bout was his opportunity to make a mark in the super-featherweight division, following his prior losses in featherweight title matches.
The match was closely watched by spectators and broadcast by Televisa. In the end, Chavez's precision, power, and tactical prowess solidified his victory. The fight went the full twelve rounds, culminating in a unanimous decision by the judges. The scorecards from Vince Delgado read 120-105, while Jerry Roth and Terry Smith both saw the fight as a more dominant 120-102 victory for Chavez.
In the lead up to the Cabrera bout, the announcement came that Chavez would be moving up in weight to challenge the World Boxing Association lightweight champion, Edwin Rosario, on November 28th in Las Vegas.
