Julio Cesar Chavez and Angel Hernandez boxed on Friday 10th April 1992 at the El Toreo de Cuatro Caminos, Mexico City for the WBC's super-lightweight championship. The event was organized by Don King Productions. Televised by Showtime Championship Boxing, the match showcased two undefeated fighters; Chavez, who resided in Culiacan, Mexico, stood with an impressive 79-0-0, while Hernandez, hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, maintained a sturdy record of 37-0-2. Both fighters came in under the 140 lb limit, Chavez at 139 lbs and Hernandez slightly heavier at 139¼ lbs.
The first round of the match was evenly contested, with Hernandez quickly engaging and landing good body and head punches. In return, Chavez was able to land a straight right punch of his own. Despite a slight cut on the bridge of his nose by the end of the round, Chavez was warned twice by referee Arthur Mercante for hitting on the break.
As the second round began, Chavez landed a couple of punches, but Hernandez was quick to clinch, restricting Chavez's ability to land any further. Although Chavez managed to connect a few more times, Hernandez's defensive manoeuvring led to another round where Chavez was warned for punching on the break.
In the third round, Hernandez continued to work the outside, landing a combo early in the round. Chavez, undeterred, responded with a good left hook. The round continued with exchanges and clinches from both sides, once again resulting in Chavez being warned for punching on the break.
Chavez, known for his fighting spirit, began the fourth round aggressively, landing harder punches, including good rights and left hooks. Despite Hernandez's attempts to hold, both fighters were actively throwing punches in the clinch. A noteworthy moment was the second warning received by Hernandez for holding, marking a shift in the fight dynamics.
The fifth and final round saw a distinct turn in the match. Chavez began to dominate, landing a few light punches and a straight right that caught Hernandez off guard. Despite his attempts to hold, Chavez hit him with an uppercut. Cornered and unable to defend himself, Hernandez was at the receiving end of Chavez's combos to his head and body. Recognizing Hernandez's predicament, referee Arthur Mercante stepped in and declared a technical knockout (TKO) at 1:11 into the round
