Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, hosted a WBC World Super-lightweight Title fight on the 8th of April, 1995. This was the 3rd defense by Mexican legend, Julio Cesar Chavez in his 2nd reign. Chavez, brought an impressive record of 92-1-1 to the fight, while his Italian counterpart, Giovanni Parisi, arrived with a strong record of 29-1-0. Weighing in at a sturdy 140 lbs, Chavez held a marginal weight advantage over Parisi, who weighed in at 139 lbs.
With the bout being promoted by the Don King Productions, it was aired on KingVision Pay-per-view. A former lightweight Olympic gold medalist, Parisi had a significant boxing history. His claim to fame was in 1992 when he won the vacant WBO lightweight title with a tenth-round TKO victory over Javier Altamirano. He later defended his title twice and scored a decision win over Freddie Pendleton before moving up in weight to challenge Chavez for the junior welterweight title.
The bout was a display of skill and strategy from both boxers, with neither shying away from pushing their limits. As the fight progressed, Chavez demonstrated his seasoned boxing skills, which he had polished over years of professional boxing. Parisi, on the other hand, put up an impressive show of resistance and tenacity, living up to his reputation as a fierce contender.
However, the night belonged to Chavez. While Parisi fought hard, the Mexican proved too strong and too experienced. Each round witnessed a display of Chavez's superior boxing skills and his relentless will to retain his title. The culmination was a unanimous decision in Chavez's favor, a result that didn't surprise those familiar with his legacy.
The scores told the story: Carol Castellano and Lou Filippo scored the bout 118-109, while Terry Smith had it 120-107. The crowd roared as the announcement echoed in the arena, adding another victorious chapter to the storied career of Julio Cesar Chavez.
Post-fight, Parisi's journey didn't end in disappointment. He would go on to win the WBO light welterweight title with an eighth-round TKO over Sammy Fuentes in 1996, defending it five times before losing to Carlos Gonzalez in 1998.
