Julio Cesar Chavez and Tony Lopez met on Saturday 10th December 1994, at the Estadio de Beisbol, Monterrey, Mexico. Defending his WBC World Super-lightweight Title for the second time in his second reign, Chavez came into the fight with a mighty impressive record of 91-1-1, compared to Lopez's 45-4-1. With the scales tipping at 140 lbs for Chavez and 139 lbs for Lopez.
The bout was shaping up, but an unfortunate turn of events occurred at the end of the second round when a cut opened over Lopez's left eye. Despite the severity of the wound, the fight was allowed to proceed.
Lopez, a resident of Sacramento, California, was no stranger to the limelight. He has crowned a world champion for the first time in 1988 when he defeated Rocky Lockridge in the Ring Magazine's fight of the year, securing his IBF super featherweight belt. This was a seminal moment in his career and one that set the tone for future performances.
His success didn't stop there. In October 1992, Lopez faced Joey Gamache, winning the WBA lightweight title through a TKO in the 11th round.
However, it was Chavez, hailing from Culiacan, Mexico, who emerged victorious from their encounter. The fight was stopped at 1:41 in the 10th round due to the severity of the cut over Lopez's left eye. The referee, Luis Carlos Guzman, made the decision under the advice of the ringside physician, culminating in a TKO victory for Chavez.
