On Saturday, December 10, 1994, the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, witnessed a thrilling boxing match between Oscar De La Hoya and John Avila. The event, promoted by Top Rank and aired on CBS Sports, featured the WBO World Lightweight Title, which was the second title defense for De La Hoya. Both boxers entered the ring with impressive records: De La Hoya at 15-0-0 and Avila at 20-1-1.
The fight began with De La Hoya demonstrating his superior speed and technique. He consistently landed powerful combinations and maintained control of the pace throughout the initial rounds. Avila, on the other hand, struggled to find his rhythm and was unable to match De La Hoya's offensive prowess.
As the fight progressed, De La Hoya's relentless attack took its toll on Avila. In the middle rounds, Avila's defense began to weaken, and De La Hoya capitalized on the opportunity, landing even more devastating blows. Avila, to his credit, showed tremendous heart and determination, refusing to back down in the face of adversity.
Despite Avila's resilience, De La Hoya's dominance only grew stronger. By the ninth round, Avila's situation had worsened, as a cut opened above his right eye. The injury impaired his vision and made it difficult for him to continue fighting effectively.
At 1:07 of the ninth round, referee Raul Caiz Sr. stepped in to halt the action. After assessing the severity of the cut, Caiz determined that it was too dangerous for Avila to continue, and declared De La Hoya the winner by technical knockout (TKO).
