Julio Cesar Martinez emerged victorious in a hard-fought, bloody 12-round battle against Angelino Cordova, retaining his WBC flyweight title by majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Mexico City native, now 21-3 with 15 knockouts, survived two severe cuts over both eyes while sending Cordova to the canvas twice in the third round. Despite the knockdowns, the Venezuelan challenger, who suffered his first professional loss and now stands at 18-1-1 with 12 KOs, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the contest.
The action was intense from the opening bell, with Cordova landing several clean left hooks in the first round. The challenger continued to succeed in the second, connecting with a straight right hand and attempting to follow up with left hooks.
However, the tide turned in the third round when Martinez dropped Cordova with a powerful jab. Upon rising, Cordova attempted to hold, but another jab moments later sent him sprawling. Despite the setbacks, Cordova survived the round by using the ring to regain his composure.
As the fight progressed, Martinez, trained by the renowned Eddy Reynoso, began to find his rhythm, landing hard shots from both stances. While still landing occasional punches, Cordova appeared to be struggling against the champion's superior skill and power.
The bout took a dramatic turn in the eighth round when Martinez began bleeding badly from a cut over his right eye. Cordova, energised by the sight of his opponent's blood, landed a bolo punch to Martinez's midsection. The situation worsened for the champion in the tenth round when a clash of heads opened a gruesome cut above his left eyebrow, prompting a doctor's inspection before the action resumed.
In the final rounds, both fighters showed signs of the gruelling battle, with Cordova bleeding from the nose and sporting a swollen jaw. In the last round, the challenger resorted to staying out of trouble, drawing the ire of the pro-Mexican crowd.
After the final bell, the judges' scorecards were split, with two judges scoring the bout 114-112 in favour of Martinez and the third judge scoring it a 113-113 draw. The majority decision allowed Martinez to retain his title and potentially move on to the unification fights he desires. However, the severity of his cuts may require a significant recovery period.
Cordova's loss is a bitter pill to swallow, but his gutsy performance and ability to rally after the early knockdowns earned him the respect of fans and pundits alike.
