On February 12, 1993, the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, hosted a pivotal WBA World Lightweight title fight between Tony "The Tiger" Lopez and Dingaan Thobela. Lopez, the reigning champion, was making his first title defence after winning the belt from Joey Gamache four months prior. Thobela, a formidable challenger from South Africa, entered the bout with an impressive record of 28-0-1. Both fighters weighed in at 134¾ lbs, setting the stage for an equally matched contest.
Thobela's performance exceeded expectations as he showcased his slick boxing skills, often outmanoeuvring Lopez in exchanges. Despite Lopez's reputation for thriving in aggressive, toe-to-toe battles, Thobela held his own and won several rounds. However, Lopez's experience and resilience allowed him to stay competitive throughout the fight. A significant moment came when Lopez suffered a cut above his right eye, which gave Thobela an advantage. Despite this, Lopez continued to push forward, relying on his grit and determination to see him through the twelve rounds.
The fight went the distance, with all three judges scoring in favour of Lopez. Rodolfo Hill and Cesar Ramos scored the bout 116-114, while Fritz Werner had it slightly closer at 115-113. The unanimous decision victory for Lopez was somewhat contentious, as many observers felt Thobela had done enough to win. Lopez's cut and Thobela's impressive display suggested that the challenger had been the better fighter on the night. Despite the outcome, Thobela's performance earned him a rematch, which took place on June 26, 1993, in Sun City, South Africa.
Thobela capitalized on his previous performance in the rematch and secured a unanimous decision victory, taking the WBA Lightweight title from Lopez. This reversal highlighted Thobela's growth and adaptability as a fighter as he adjusted his strategy to outmanoeuvre Lopez more effectively in their second encounter. The rivalry between Lopez and Thobela showcased the competitive depth of the lightweight division during the early 1990s, with both fighters contributing to an exciting period in boxing history.
