The fight
On November 8, 2014, at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, Sergey Kovalev dominated Bernard Hopkins in a light heavyweight unification bout dubbed "Alien vs. Krusher." The fight materialized after both men failed to face WBC champion Adonis Stevenson, with the IBF pressuring Hopkins to either face Kovalev or mandatory challenger Nadjib Mohammedi.
Kovalev established dominance early, dropping Hopkins with a right hand in the first round while Hopkins' head was briefly turned. The knockdown set the tone for the entire fight, with Kovalev dictating the pace through consistent offensive pressure. Though Hopkins maintained better accuracy with his punches, Kovalev's volume proved overwhelming, landing 166 of 585 punches compared to Hopkins' 65 total connects.
The bout marked several milestones: it was Kovalev's first time going beyond eight rounds, and it represented Golden Boy Promotions' return to HBO after a 20-month absence following Hopkins' victory over Tavoris Cloud. Despite Hopkins' renowned defensive skills and still-nimble legs at age 49, he remained primarily defensive throughout the contest, unable to mount a significant offence against the younger champion.
Kovalev saved his most aggressive work for the final round, battering Hopkins while sustaining only minor damage himself - a tiny mouse under his left eye. Referee David Fields issued several warnings to Kovalev for hitting behind the head, but the fight remained relatively clean with minimal clinching.
The judges' scorecards reflected Kovalev's complete control: 120-107 twice and 120-106, matching HBO commentator Harold Lederman's unofficial scoring. The victory unified Kovalev's WBO title with Hopkins' WBA (Super) and IBF belts, effectively ending Hopkins' remarkable late-career run at light heavyweight.
