Frenchman Rene Jacquot was a big underdog going into his WBC World Super-welterweight Title challenge to former undisputed welterweight world champion Donald 'The Lone Star Cobra' Curry despite having home advantage and an enthusiastic crowd of 6000 screaming his every success.
It looked as if the oddsmakers were right as Curry built an early lead with his superior boxing skills but in the second half, Jacquot took over as Curry faded. The result was a unanimous decision win for Jacquot, the first Frenchman in 30 years to win a world boxing championship.
Scores: Sid Nathan 117-113 | Jesus Torres 118-116 | Justo Vasquez Marcos 117-115.
The fight was named The Ring Upset of the Year for 1989.
