On Saturday, 1st June 1991, Terry Norris defended his WBC World Super Welter Title for the third time against challenger Donald Curry at the Radisson Resort in Palm Springs, California. The event was promoted by Main Events and Al Goosen Promotions. The bout aired on HBO World Championship Boxing, with Chuck Hassett serving as the referee. At the time of the fight, Terry Norris held a record of 27-3-0 and hailed from Campo, California, while Donald Curry had a record of 33-4-0 and came from Fort Worth, Texas.
Entering the contest, Terry Norris was a 4-1 favorite, while Curry was ranked as the WBC #8 super welterweight contender. The purse for the fight saw Norris receiving $750,000, and Curry earning $115,000. The match progressed with high intensity as both fighters showcased their skill and determination to claim the title.
The pivotal moments occurred in the 7th and 8th rounds of the fight. In the 7th round, Curry was knocked down once but managed to recover and continue the bout. The 8th round, however, proved to be decisive. Curry initially appeared to sting Norris with a left-right combination, but Norris responded with a fierce flurry of punches that ultimately overwhelmed Curry.
A straight right from Norris hurt Curry, followed by a second right that toppled him. As Curry was on his knees, Norris lunged in and caught him flush with another right. This sequence of events bore a resemblance to Norris' previous fight against Sugar Ray Leonard. Referee Chuck Hassett counted as Curry struggled to regain his footing.
By the count of eight, Curry managed to raise himself onto one elbow. However, as Hassett's count reached 10, Curry fell back again, with his eyes closed and blood streaming from his nose. The fight concluded at 2:54 in the 8th round, with Terry Norris emerging victorious by knockout.
