On Sunday, March 9th, 1986, Donald Curry successfully defended his WBA Welterweight Title for the seventh time against Eduardo Rodriguez in front of a lively crowd at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. The fight was promoted by Top Rank and aired on CBS Sports.
The first round saw both fighters come out aggressively, with Curry using his superior speed and technique to gain the upper hand. Rodriguez struggled to land any significant punches, and Curry capitalized on his opponent's weaknesses, landing a series of punishing blows towards the end of the round.
The second round saw Curry step up his aggression, landing a series of powerful combinations that left Rodriguez reeling. The Panamanian fighter attempted to fight back, but was ultimately overwhelmed by Curry's superior skill and power. At 2 minutes and 29 seconds into the round, Curry landed a devastating right hook that sent Rodriguez crashing to the canvas, unable to rise before the count of ten.
Referee Hubert Earle quickly called a stop to the fight, awarding Curry a second-round knockout victory and securing his seventh successful title defense. The victory improved Curry's impressive record to 25-0-0, with 19 KOs, and cemented his status as one of the most dominant welterweights of the era.
