Mike McCallum travelled to the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts to make the first defence of the WBA world middleweight title he won in a vacant title match against Herol Graham in London, England nine months earlier.
Steve Collins moved from his home in Ireland to progress his professional career with the Petronelli brothers in Brockton, Massachusetts. He shared a gym with Marvin Hagler and had his first nineteen fights in the states before heading back to Europe.
McCallum, born in jamaica also made his home in the USA and became the WBA world super-welterweight champion in 1984 and made six defences of the title before moving up to middleweight.
McCallum's experience was too much for the Irishman and he won by a clear unanimous decision.
Scores: Lynne Carter 117-111 | Nicasio Drake 118-110 | Charles Williams 117-111.
