WBO World Super-bantamweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera made the fifth defence of his title at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California against Olympic gold medalist and former IBF titleholder Kennady McKinney. The champion came into the much-anticipated bout with an impressive 39-0 record and was seen as possibly the best Mexican boxer since Julio Cesar Chavez.

A fight had broken out between Barrera and McKinney at the press conference, so when the bell sounded to start the 1st round the Mexican champion attacked at a ferocious pace. The challenger met fire with fire and appeared to be up by the midway stage only for Barrera to find his second wind and take over in the second half.

KvKinney was on the canvas twice in 8th, once in the 9th, and twice in the 12th, the last knockout ending the fight. He did, however, knock Barrera down in the 11th.

The fight was the first-ever show in HBO's "Boxing after dark" series. What a way to start.
