The fight
On February 3, 1963, at the Forum in Copenhagen, Emile Griffith (152 lbs) defended his World Junior Middleweight title against local veteran Chris "Gentleman Chris" Christensen (150¼ lbs). The bout had generated pre-fight controversy when a Danish parliament member attempted to prevent it, expressing concerns about the 36-year-old Christensen's safety despite his recent victory over Wally Swift.
Under referee Robert Seidel's supervision and promoted by Team Palle, Griffith demonstrated his superiority from the outset. The champion, celebrating his 25th birthday, methodically broke down his older opponent, scoring the first knockdown in round three. The end came in the ninth round when Griffith floored Christensen twice with right crosses before launching a two-fisted assault that prompted Christensen's corner to throw in the towel.
Griffith displayed complete control throughout the contest, often taking moments between his combinations to assess their impact. This display of dominance validated the pre-fight concerns about the fighters' age and competitive disparity, with Griffith's speed and power proving too much for the Danish veteran.
