The fight

On April 14, 1990, the Royal Albert Hall in London hosted a WBA World Middleweight Title clash between champion Mike McCallum and challenger Michael Watson. Defending his title for the second time, McCallum entered the fight with a record of 37-1-0 and weighed in at 159¾ lbs. With a record of 22-1-1, Watson matched the middleweight limit of 160 lbs.

Promoted by Matchroom Boxing and broadcast on ITV Sport, the bout drew significant attention as McCallum had visited London before when he faced Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham for the vacant title a year earlier.

In the early rounds, McCallum asserted his superior skillset, employing his signature body punches and precise combinations to control the pace. Watson attempted to impose his own game, using movement and sharp counters to keep the champion at bay. However, McCallum’s experience and ability to adapt became increasingly evident as the fight progressed.

By the middle rounds, McCallum had begun to wear down Watson with sustained pressure and a relentless focus on the body. To his credit, Watson continued to fight back valiantly, landing occasional counters that momentarily disrupted McCallum’s rhythm. Despite his efforts, the cumulative effect of McCallum’s attacks started to take its toll on the challenger.

In the eleventh round, McCallum delivered a decisive sequence of punches that left Watson unable to continue. Referee Roberto Ramirez Sr stepped in to halt the bout, awarding McCallum a knockout victory and the successful defence of his WBA title. The result underscored McCallum’s reputation as one of his generation's most technically proficient and durable fighters.

Watson's loss was a setback but not a defining moment, as he would go on to achieve notable success later in his career. The fight further solidified McCallum's standing as a dominant middleweight champion, showcasing his ability to overcome a skilled and determined opponent in a high-stakes contest.
