Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Louis Pergaud

On May 11, 1980, the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hosted a significant boxing event as Matthew Saad Muhammad defended his WBC World Light Heavyweight Title against Louis Pergaud. Promoted by Top Rank and broadcast on ABC's Wide World of Sports, the fight was refereed by Rudy Ortega.

Saad Muhammad, with a record of 25-3-2, and Pergaud, 17-1-0, both weighed 174½ lbs, although Muhammad had to lose 2½ lbs to reach the weight limit.

In the first round, Pergaud came out aggressively, utilizing his southpaw stance to land solid jabs and straight lefts. However, Muhammad's harder and more eye-catching shots gave him the edge. The second round was more evenly matched, with Pergaud's better boxing skills possibly giving him the upper hand, though he had to grab Muhammad after a straight right hand wobbled him.

In the third round, Pergaud maintained a long-range strategy that was more successful than in the previous rounds. However, when the fighters engaged in close combat, it became clear that Muhammad's physical strength and effective body punching were crucial factors.

The complexion of the bout changed significantly in the fourth round when Muhammad introduced a long, sweeping right hook that rocked Pergaud. The fifth round began with Pergaud increasing his offensive pressure, pushing Muhammad to the ropes. However, Muhammad's relentless body attack continued to pay off. An attempted left hook to the body by Muhammad caught Pergaud flush on the chin, sending him to the floor as if he had been shot.

Pergaud managed to get back to his feet but was in bad shape, stumbling on wobbly legs. Referee Rudy Ortega had no choice but to stop the fight at 1:19 of the fifth round, declaring Saad Muhammad the winner by TKO. This victory marked another successful title defence for Muhammad, solidifying his position as the WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion.
