The fight

On November 28, 1980, the Sports Arena in San Diego, California, hosted the WBC World Light Heavyweight title match between champion Matthew Saad Muhammad and the undefeated challenger Lottie Mwale in what would be Saad Muhammad's fifth title defence.

Saad Muhammad, with a record of 27-3-2 and weighing 175 lbs, was known for his formidable skills in the ring, having recently impressed critics with his victories over John Conte. His opponent, Lottie Mwale, a powerful and crowd-pleasing fighter from Zambia, boasted an unblemished record of 21-0-0 and weighed in at 172½ lbs. Mwale had risen to the number one contender spot and held the Commonwealth title, having previously served as a sparring partner for John Conte.

The fight began with both fighters showing their prowess, but it was clear that Mwale was overconfident after a strong start in the first two rounds. Saad Muhammad, however, was to be considered. He absorbed Mwale's powerful punches and waited for the perfect moment to strike.

Saad Muhammad delivered a devastating combination in the fourth round, ending the fight. A right hand caught Mwale on the temple, followed by a left uppercut that sent Mwale crashing to the floor, his mouthpiece flying out of the ring. The knockout was so severe that Mwale was out before he hit the ground.

Referee Tony Perez counted Mwale out, declaring Saad Muhammad the winner by knockout in the fourth round. This victory solidified Saad Muhammad's claim as the top light heavyweight champion.

Harold Smith promoted the match, and Tony Perez was the referee. Despite the pre-fight trash talk, Saad Muhammad showed compassion towards Mwale after the fight, highlighting the respect between the two fighters.
