Matthew Saad Muhammad vs John Conteh II

On March 29, 1980, at Resorts International in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Matthew Saad Muhammad defended his WBC World Light Heavyweight Title against John Conteh. Both fighters weighed in at 175 lbs; Saad Muhammad entered with a record of 24-3-2, while Conteh stood at 33-3-1. The bout was promoted by Top Rank and officiated by referee Octavio Meyran. Broadcast on ABC's "Wide World of Sports," the fight attracted significant attention.

Both fighters engaged cautiously in the first three rounds, with Saad Muhammad gradually asserting control. By the fourth round, Saad Muhammad's dominance became evident as he unleashed a series of powerful combinations, leading to five knockdowns of Conteh. After the fifth knockdown, referee Meyran stopped the fight at 2:27, awarding Saad Muhammad a technical knockout victory. 

This marked Saad Muhammad's second successful defence of his WBC title.

The fight was a rematch ordered by the WBC after their first encounter in 1979, where Saad Muhammad's corner was found to have used an illegal substance to stop bleeding from a cut. Saad Muhammad's decisive performance left no room for controversy in this second meeting.
