Champion Hopkins made the 9th defence against southpaw Robert Allen in the second of three meetings the two would share.

Their first meeting six months earlier had ended in a No Contest after only four rounds when referee Mills Lane accidentally shoved Hopkins through the ropes and out of the ring while trying to break up a clinch.

After a foul infested first four rounds, referee Rudy battle finally got some clean fighting out of Hopkins and Allen. Hopkins dropped Allen in the 2nd and 6th rounds and always appeared to have the edge in punching power.

In the 7th, Hopkins piled on the pressure and Allen couldn't stay with him, eventually being rescued by the referee. The time of the stoppage: 1:18 of the round.
