Vinny Pazienza and Greg Haugen met for the second time in eight months on February 6th, 1988. In their first fight, Pazienza became a world titleholder for the first time when he took the IBF world lightweight belt from Haugen on a unanimous decision in his hometown, Providence, Rhode Island.

The second meeting took place at the Convention Center in Atlantic City and Haugen regained the title, again by a unanimous points decision.

The pair would meet for a third time in August 1990 in the super-lightweight division with Pazienza emerging victorious after 10 rounds.
