After making the first defence of his IBO World Cruiserweight Title against Jorge Castro at home in South Africa, Rothmann took his title to England to face the teak-tough 40-year-old Carl Thompson, the former WBO world champion.
Rothmann was the better boxer of the two and rocked the Englishman on several occasions as well as flooring him in the 4th round, but Thompson had shown many times in the past that he is at his most dangerous when hurt.
In the 9th round, Rothman had the challenger reeling against the ropes and it looked as if it was all over when Thompson threw a right hand that flattened the champion who, although he made it to his feet, fell back into the ropes as referee Richie Davies reached the count of eight.
