Antonio Tarver vs Bernard Hopkins

On June 10, 2006, Bernard Hopkins faced Antonio Tarver at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in a bout billed as "Fight to the Finish." This light heavyweight clash saw Hopkins, the former middleweight king, moving up two weight classes to challenge Tarver for his IBO and NBA titles and The Ring magazine's light heavyweight championship.

Hopkins, at 41, entered the fight as a 3-to-1 underdog against the 37-year-old Tarver. The bout attracted significant attention, drawing a crowd of 10,200 and generating 330,000 pay-per-view buys, resulting in $16.5 million in revenue.

The fight itself was a masterclass by Hopkins. Despite increasing weight, he thoroughly outboxed and outworked Tarver over 12 rounds. Hopkins' superior movement and defence frustrated Tarver, who struggled to land clean shots throughout the bout. Compubox stats showed Hopkins landing 133 punches to Tarver's 78 despite throwing fewer overall (526 to Tarver's 437).

A key moment came in the fifth round when Hopkins was credited with a knockdown. Though controversial, with replays inconclusive as to whether Tarver's glove actually touched the canvas, it further exemplified Hopkins' dominance.

The judges' scorecards reflected the one-sided nature of the bout, with all three scoring 118-109 in favour of Hopkins. ESPN's unofficial scorecard concurred. Tarver's right eye was nearly swollen shut by the end of the fight, a visible testament to Hopkins' accuracy and Tarver's inability to avoid punishment.

This victory was particularly impressive given the circumstances. Hopkins had come off two consecutive losses to Jermain Taylor at middleweight, while Tarver was considered the premier light heavyweight in the world. Moreover, Hopkins accomplished what his idol Sugar Ray Robinson couldn't – moving up from middleweight to capture a light heavyweight title.

The fight had financial implications beyond the purses (Hopkins was guaranteed $5 million, Tarver $3.5 million). Tarver had bet Hopkins $250,000 that he would stop him within five rounds. Having failed to do so, this sum was donated to Hopkins' Make A Way Foundation.

Post-fight, controversy emerged when Tarver suggested he might have been drugged before the bout, claiming he felt like a "dead man walking." However, he offered no proof, and his post-fight urinalysis was clean. Some attributed Tarver's poor performance to his dramatic weight loss – he had to shed over 40 pounds after portraying a heavyweight in the film "Rocky Balboa."
