The fight was promoted by Sam Silverman.

The fight was attended by a crowd of 8,422 who paid a gross gate of $67,656. Pender received about $45,000, including $26,250 from the $150,000 paid for television rights. Robinson received $105,000 from TV and $18,000 from the gate for a total of $123,000.

The Associated Press scored the fight 144-141 for Pender. It was a close fight that saw both fighters give their all in the ring. Robinson started strong and won the first two rounds with his quick jabs and powerful hooks. However, Pender came back strong in the third round and landed some solid punches that shook Robinson.

The middle rounds were closely contested with both fighters landing some good shots. However, it was Pender who seemed to be getting the better of Robinson as he landed some heavy blows that left Robinson reeling.

Robinson came back strong in the later rounds and landed some good shots of his own. However, it was not enough to overcome Pender’s lead on points. In the end, Pender won a split decision to retain his title.
